What is it?
As always, Summer Camp is a very special event during the course of the Company’s year, and Camp 2017 should prove no exception. Many BB Companies just like ours go away for a week’s holiday under canvas, and this has been a tradition for over 60 years here at the 14th Croydon. Camp is the highlight of the session for many of our members, and is a time for both campers and staff to relax and have fun, building good relationships through sharing meals and activities together. Camp has a very relaxed, friendly, family atmosphere with some staff members quite often taking their young children. So, whether you have previously experienced camping BB style or not, you are assured of a great week!
When is it?
Camp runs for 8 days from Saturday 5th August to Saturday 12th August 2017 and is packed full of non-stop, fun filled activities!
What do we do?
Life on Camp includes four meals a day, shared at set meals times in a large marquee. There will also be lots of fun activities every day whilst at camp; usually on site activities in the mornings, and off-site in the afternoons (typical off-site activities include things like rock climbing, body-boarding, coasteering, etc). Each day starts with getting washed and dressed, followed by inspection of tents and personal equipment (this is not too strict, but just enough to ensure that the young people keep themselves, their personal belongings, and their tent clean and tidy during the week away).
Where is it?
Summer Camp 2017 will be located at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight, at a camp site run by the Freshwater Trust, who are an organisation made up of ex-boys, ex-staff and current Officers of the 5th Croydon Boys’ Brigade Company. The camp site itself is located to the west of the island, at Freshwater, near Totland on the coast. The Company has camped on the Isle of Wight many times over the years, and Freshwater is one of our favourite sites.
This site is pleasantly situated next to an orchard amid carefully tended fields, with a superb view of Tennyson Down. The walk to the beach is through country lanes or across fields. Nearest popular beach is Totland Bay, approximately 15 minutes walk. Freshwater Bay is 11/4 miles, Alum Bay 2 miles and Colwell Bay 1 mile from the camp site. The beach at Totland is sandy, large and good for swimming. Stroud Playing Field and Totland Recreation Ground are both a short walk away and suitable for cricket etc.
Freshwater is the best shopping centre on West Wight and is 10 minutes walk from the camp site. Freshwater also has a modern indoor swimming pool and leisure centre with tennis courts nearby. Bus services to places of interest near and far are available from Freshwater. West Wight is doubly blessed with not only a superb coastline but hundreds of acres of unspoilt countryside to explore. How much is it?
Camp usually costs somewhere around £240 which may be paid in instalments if preferred. However, if the cost of camp is an issue, then please talk to us, as we may possibly be able to find a way to help. We don’t want anything to prevent any young person from experiencing BB Summer Camp!
